This project is a children’s comic book centred around themes of self-confidence, individuality, and emotional growth through symbolic visual storytelling. The story follows Mike, the main character, whose hair continuously grows whenever he feels insecure or lacks confidence. His physical appearance becomes a visual representation of his internal emotions, allowing younger audiences to understand emotional struggles in a simple and engaging way. In contrast, the other characters confidently embrace their own differences and personalities, each represented by colourful balloons symbolising self-acceptance and emotional freedom, while Mike’s black balloon reflects his isolation and uncertainty throughout parts of the narrative.

Visually, the project was heavily inspired by animated storytelling styles from shows such as The Amazing World of Gumball and Gravity Falls, combining expressive character design, vibrant colour palettes, and symbolic graphic elements to strengthen the emotional narrative. The balloon motif acts as a recurring visual device throughout the book, with shifts in colour, movement, and scale helping communicate emotional changes across different scenes. Careful attention was given to composition, pacing, typography, and page layouts to ensure a smooth visual flow and maintain engagement throughout the reading experience.

Although comic design falls outside my usual creative focus, which is more connected to advertising, photography, and textile-related work, this project challenged me to explore storytelling through a completely different design approach. It strengthened my ability to communicate complex emotions visually while adapting my creative process to narrative-driven design.
